Th ey usually arise during synthesis when parts of the material expand or con tract. In growing tissues\, contractile cells put the surrounding extracel lular matrix under substantial loads\, thereby generating internal stresse s that help shaping the organ. Internal stresses can also arise when parts of the material are swelling by water absorption or desorption through os motic effects\, a process very common in plants. The lecture will review r ecent experiments and modeling results on how internal stresses play a cru cial role in tissue shaping by growth or by swelling.\n DTSTART:20251104T180000Z DTEND:20251104T193000Z LOCATION:OM 10\, Maass Chemistry Building\, CA\, QC\, Montreal\, H3A 0B8\, 801 rue Sherbrooke Ouest SUMMARY:Chemical Society Seminar: Peter Fratzl (Purves Lecture)- On the rol e of internal stresses in actuation and in growth of biological materials URL:/chemistry/channels/event/chemical-society-seminar -peter-fratzl-purves-lecture-role-internal-stresses-actuation-and-growth-3 68667 END:VEVENT END:VCALENDAR
