This is a challenge that African American m igrants continued to face even after moving to the so-called ‘promised lan d’ now known as Canada. Despite continuing to be met with the very racism they were fleeing from in the US\, these freed Black men and women built m ultiple settlements across the country. Through the physical act of buildi ng Black settlements\, they negotiated their identities as Africans\, thei r ex-enslaved identities as property\, and their futuristic identities as freedwomen and men. This very complex negotiation and its manifestation th rough architectural space will form the basis of this discussion.\n\nOrgan ized as part of the Society for the Study of Architecture in Canada's 2021 Annual Conference under the theme “Architecture in the Clouds\,” this rou ndtable discussion will center on the past\, present\, and future of Black architectures and spaces in Canada. Some questions this conversation will attempt to engage are: how did the lived experiences of Black migrants in form the architectural designs of their settlements? What are the conseque nces of the subsequent destruction of these Black communities? How can we preserve these important buildings and the histories they reveal?\n\nOvera ll\, this discussion aims to bring into focus a previously ignored dimensi on of architectural inquiry\, and move the architectural contributions of Black Canadians to the foreground to create a platform from which new Blac k architectures can be created.\n\nSession chair: Destiny Kirumira\n\nPane lists:\n\nDorothy Williams\n Cheryl Foggo\n Sabrina Jafralie\n June Francis\n \nNo need to register!\n\nThis event is free and open to all.
