Today, the Honourable Mélanie Joly, Minister of Industry and Minister responsible for Canada Economic Development for Quebec Regions, announced over $198 million in federal funding through the Canada Research Chairs (CRC) program, including more than $13 million to support 19 Chairs—nine new and ten renewed—at ��Ǿ�Ʒ��.

Thirty-two ��Ǿ�Ʒ�� research project have received new funding from the Canada Foundation for Innovation (CFI) for investments in research infrastructure to support their innovative projects, for a total federal investment of $9.7 million.

These grants will be matched by the Quebec government, doubling their value.

Eric McCalla, Associate Professor in the Department of Chemistry, has received a Designing Materials to Revolutionize and Engineer our Future (DMREF) grant, a joint program of the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC) and the U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF).

Ian Watson, Member of the Goodman Cancer Institute and Associate Professor in the Department of Biochemistry has received funding from the Marathon of Hope Cancer Centres Network’s (MOHCCN) Data Sharing & Use Pilot program, aimed at helping build Canada’s capacity for large-scale collaborative cancer research while paving the way for more personalised cancer care.

��Ǿ�Ʒ�� researchers win Brain Canada’s Future Leaders in Canadian Brain Research Award

Jérôme Fortin, Paul Masset, and Simon Thebault have received the Future Leaders in Canadian Brain Research Award from Brain Canada for their research in brain cognition, brain cancer, and neurological disabilities.

The ��Ǿ�Ʒ�� researchers are among 22 successful applicants from across the country. They will each receive $100,000 in research funding distributed over a period of two years.

��Ǿ�Ʒ�� cleantech spinoff FeX Energy secures major funding

��Ǿ�Ʒ�� spinoff company FeX Energy has recently received USD ($3.5M) to finance their pursuit of renewable, long-term energy storage. FeX is developing iron-based long-duration energy storage, aiding the transition to affordable and scalable clean energy. The company’s core technology emerged from ��Ǿ�Ʒ��’s Alternative Fuels Lab led by Professor Jeffrey Bergthorson.

Claire M. Brown, Professor in the Department of Physiology, has been selected as Chair for Inclusion in Science and Engineering (CISE) in the province of Quebec. The newly established CISE program is jointly funded by the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council (NSERC) and the Fonds de recherche du Québec – Nature et technologies (FRQNT).

On September 4, the Royal Society of Canada (RSC) announced its newest cohort of Fellows, and members of the College of New Scholars, Artists and Scientists. Amongst the 2025 cohort are eleven ��Ǿ�Ʒ�� researchers and scholars – seven newly elected Fellows and four new Members – recognized for their exceptional contributions to their fields. In addition to these appointments, three ��Ǿ�Ʒ�� scholars received prestigious RSC awards:

The Social Science and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC) recently announced the recipients of its 2024 SSHRC Insight Grants awarding $127.6 million in funding to 693 research projects from institutions across Canada. Among the recipients are 40 ��Ǿ�Ʒ��-led projects, totalling just over $7 million.
