Applicants from other Canadian Universities

To qualify for an elective at º£½Ç¾«Æ·ºÚÁÏ, you must meet the following requirements:

  • You must be a medical doctor.
  • You must be registered in a residency or fellowship program.
  • You must have made prior arrangements with the medical department where you'd like to do an elective.
  • If you did your MD in Quebec or completed a residency program in Quebec, you did not exceed more than 6Ìýmonths of electives at any Quebec University as a resident/fellow.

Out-of-province trainees can complete a minimum of one period (=28 days) and aÌýmaximum of four periods of elective rotations at º£½Ç¾«Æ·ºÚÁÏ. The elective rotation must match the PGME Periods calendar dates.

IMPORTANT: YourÌýelective application and required documents must be received by the º£½Ç¾«Æ·ºÚÁÏ PGME Office two months prior to the start of your elective rotation. Unfortunately, we will not consider applications that are late or that areÌýmissing documents.

Electives for trainees with Work Permits from Other Canadian Universities:

Trainees enrolled at other Canadian universities, whose work permits are issued through their home institutions, may come to º£½Ç¾«Æ·ºÚÁÏ under the terms of their existing closed work permits, provided the CIC Offer of Employment submitted by the home university permits rotations at other Canadian universities. Please note, however, that if the work permit specifies a particular location (e.g., Vancouver) as the place of employment, the trainee will not be authorized to complete an elective at º£½Ç¾«Æ·ºÚÁÏ due to this restriction.

The same applies to trainees holding an open work permit. If their work permit includes restrictions on the province of employment or medical field employment (e.g., for candidates who have not passed a medical exam), these restrictions must be removed before the trainee can work at a º£½Ç¾«Æ·ºÚÁÏ Hospital network.

  • Communicate using your current student status university email address.
  • If you are coming to º£½Ç¾«Æ·ºÚÁÏ for an elective that is a part of an Inter-institution Affiliation Agreement between º£½Ç¾«Æ·ºÚÁÏ and your Home University, please contact pgmeelectives [at] mcgill.caÌýbefore submitting an application online.
  • Submit your application using the and pay the application fee.ÌýNote the application fee is non-refundable.

  • If you are required to complete a rotation at º£½Ç¾«Æ·ºÚÁÏ due to an inter-university agreement and require a work permit to train in Canada, contact our office for further information.


Required Documents:

  • Copy of your medical degree (with English translation, ifÌýapplicable). *Canadian Medical Graduates - you also must create an account and register on physiciansapply.ca. Then submit a copy of your MD diploma to physiciansapply.ca.
  • Proof of Canadian Medical Protective Association (CMPA)Ìýmalpractice insurance coverage – you can apply for CMPA insuranceÌý
  • Proof of Canadian citizenship, permanent residency or a work permit – note that Canadian passports are not accepted, please review the website for acceptable legal documents.
  • Have your program director write a letter of support and funding, indicating that your salary will be maintained during your elective period. This letter must include the start and end dates of your elective as well as the elective program's name. It must be sent by e-mail directly from yourÌýhome university on official letterhead. The letter must be sent to pgmeelectives [at] mcgill.ca.


Eligibility for Licensure:

  • You must obtain a training card from the Collège des médecins du Québec (CMQ). Once the CMQ receives all of the required documents from º£½Ç¾«Æ·ºÚÁÏ, itÌýwill send you instructions by e-mail about how to obtain your training care.Ìý

  • Open an account and register on . Fees apply ($).
  • Submit a copy of your M.D diploma to physiciansapply.ca for . You must share the document with the CMQ. If a translation is needed, please check the page . Fees apply ($).

* Source verification is a process that takes time, we invite you to submit the copy of the MD as soon as possible.

** Any document that does not fulfill the requirements of the CMQ will be refused, even though the status of the document is "Verified" at physiciansapply.ca. The candidate will have to submit the required document to physiciansapply.ca. for source verification.

  • Once º£½Ç¾«Æ·ºÚÁÏ (PGME Office) sends the required information for your file to the CMQ, the CMQ will communicate with you by email. Please wait until you receive instructions from the CMQ (please check your emails including your spam).
